Montgó Natural Park: a green lung between the sea and the mountains

Between Dénia and Jávea, just where the Mediterranean embraces the mountains, rises an unmistakable silhouette, the Montgó. But beyond its imposing form, the Montgó Natural Park is one of the great natural treasures of the Marina Alta, a place where nature, hiking and the sea come together to create a spectacular landscape.

Declared a natural park in 1987, this protected area is much more than a mountain. It is a green lung between the sea and the mountains, full of life, routes and viewpoints that you will fall in love with at first sight. Keep reading to learn more!

Hiking in Montgó: routes and paths for all levels

One of the best ways to discover Montgó is on foot. Its network of trails is designed for everyone, from those who want a quiet walk to those who enjoy reaching the summits.

The most popular route is the Path to the geodesic vertex of Montgó, which starts from Jesús Pobre or Dénia and ascends to the summit. The reward, in addition to the 360-degree panoramic view, is the sensation of being between the sky and the sea. If the day is clear, Ibiza and Formentera can be seen from the summit as two shadows on the horizon.

Another interesting option is the Ruta de la Cova de l’Aigua, which combines history and nature. This path, somewhat shorter, leads to a cave used in Roman times to store water. Its interior contains inscriptions from the 16th century and a perfect coolness to pause and enjoy the silence.

For those who prefer something more relaxed, there is the Ruta del Coll de Pous, a simple and circular circuit that crosses fields of almond trees, olive groves and small traditional buildings. Ideal for families or those looking for contact with the environment without giving up the views.

Flora, fauna and landscapes of Montgó that you won't want to miss

Montgó is an authentic natural mosaic. In just a few kilometers, the landscape changes from coastal pine forests to aromatic scrubland, with an endless number of plant species adapted to the Mediterranean climate.

More than 650 species of flora have been cataloged, some so rare that they only grow here, such as Silene dianae, a small white flower that clings to the rocks. There are also abundant rosemary, lavender and thyme that fill the air with intense perfumes.

As for fauna, bird watchers are in celebration, since in Montgó it is common to see Bonelli’s eagles, falcons, seagulls and kestrels, all gliding on the wind. In the quieter areas live foxes, hedgehogs and even wild boars.

The contrast between the white rock and the intense blue of the sea turns every corner of the park into a postcard. It is no coincidence that it is one of the most photographed spaces on the Alicante north coast.

Viewpoints and panoramic points to take the best photo

Going up to Montgó without stopping at its viewpoints would be a traveler’s sin. There are several points from which the landscape takes your breath away, such as the Mirador del Cabo de San Antonio, with its views of Dénia, the port and the Gulf of Valencia.

Further south, from the cliffs of Les Planes, the coast up to Jávea is dominated, with the lighthouse marking the highest point. When the afternoon falls, the golden light dyes the rocks and turns the scene into a natural spectacle difficult to describe.

Another corner much loved by locals is the Mirador de Santa Lucía, in Jávea, perfect for watching the sunrise over the Mediterranean, where every minute the sky changes color.

Practical tips for exploring Montgó without setbacks

We recommend that you choose the time well, to avoid midday climbs, especially in the hottest months, although in winter, it is advisable to climb at that time to take advantage of the sun.

Remember to bring water and something to eat, as there are no fountains or bars on the routes. We also advise you to wear comfortable shoes, as the roads are made of limestone and are somewhat irregular. Of course, do not leave a trace of waste. It is a protected park and is everyone’s responsibility to care for it.

What to see in the surroundings: nearby plans to round off the excursion

In the immediate vicinity there are other places worth visiting taking advantage of the stay.

Dénia: history, tapas and sea

After sweating a bit in the mountains, you deserve a good reward. Dénia, just a few minutes from the park, is perfect for regaining strength. Its old town, dominated by the castle, keeps charming alleys, artisan shops and bars where tapas are almost a religion.

The port and the promenade retain that authentic seafaring aroma, and the restaurants by the water serve the best of the sea in paella, fideuá or fresh grilled fish. If you like markets, the one in Dénia is a festival of colors and aromas every morning.

Jávea: hidden coves

At the other end of Montgó is Jávea, another must-see. Strolling through its Port and the Barrio del Duanes de la Mar, walking through the white streets of the old town or approaching its coves is a guarantee of landscape and good atmosphere.

And if you still have energy after the trail, you can take a look at the Mirador de la Falzia or Cabo de la Nao, where the Mediterranean is shown in its wildest version.

Jesús Pobre and the inland towns

The charming town of Jesús Pobre, between Dénia and Gata de Gorgos, celebrates its Mercat del Riurau, a local market where organic products, handicrafts and homemade sweets are sold, every Sunday. Perfect for recovering energies with authentic flavor.

And if you have time, visit Gata de Gorgos, famous for its wicker and esparto crafts. There you will discover that the Mediterranean is also woven by hand.
